Ginga Denshou: Galaxy Odyssey (FDS) English Translation

IPS Patch Download:

This was the first release by Imagineer on the WAVE JACK label, which, in exchange for the then-exorbitant price of 5000 yen, came with an audio tape (containing music and the storyline), a novella-with-hintbook, lyric sheet, and the FDS disk itself.  It was thus unavailable from Disk Writer stations (where FDS games were sold for 500 yen.)

Ginga Denshou is an RPG-style overhead action-shooting game, with a vertical space-shoot-em-up used to connect the action levels.  It is most similar to Guardian Legend or Super Star Force. The "RPG" elements come into play in that you'll need to do lots of old-style RPG grinding, destroying enemies to collect Gold (used to buy more powerful weapons & equipment), Oxygen (which trickles down constantly in the action levels), Cannon Shots (powerful bullets), Life, etc. There is also a leveling system where on early planets, enemies drop only a little Gold, until you reach a certain amount, at which point they stop dropping Gold altogether. You'll have to move on to a later planet to defeat tougher enemies, where they start dropping comparatively large amounts of Gold. That sort of thing.

Story

The human race had migrated from Earth to the planet Kyril. Disastrously, a mysterious disease dubbed "SUDO" started infecting the people. It is believed that the cure for this disease lies on the planet Hope, a planet whose ancient civilization had once spread all over the star system. Many areas on these planets contain clues written in the ancient Hope language, directing people to the cure, if they can read such writings.

It appears that there are 6 treasures scattered on the satellites around and including Hope. If a person collects all 6 treasures (collectively named "KIRUNO" in the story) by the time they reach the centre of Hope, they will be able to exchange them for the fabled "Medicine of the Gods", the cure for the SUDO disease infecting humankind.

Three human friends, Satoru, Rita, and Lyle, have set out on a mission to find these treasures in their spaceship, the Nebula. Satoru pilots the Nebula in the space segments, while Lyle assists as the mechanic and Rita provides and mixes medicine. On the planet's surface, Satoru skims down from his ship in a one-man pod, the Uryu, and explores the area in his space suit.

In Space

Once you have collected Cannon Shots, always try to destroy enemies with the Cannon Shot (rather than the regular shot). Enemies destroyed this way will drop much larger-value items, which is a necessity for stockpiling oxygen and gold!
Also... The Cannon's power will increase in level the more you use it.
When your ship reaches an area on the planet (denoted by a letter of the alphabet), pressing A will allow you to descend to that area's surface.
The areas on each planet cycle randomly, meaning lots of waiting sometimes for the specific area you want to descend to. If you want to go quickly to a specific area, warp to a different planet, then warp back to the letter of the specific area you want to land on; that area will show up next.  (The randomization of areas is seeded by how many times you shoot the Cannon Shot, interestingly enough.)

On the Ground

Oxygen basically equates to your time limit in that area. The count will decrease about every 3 seconds.
Purchasing a helmet will slow your oxygen consumption.
Hidden passages & caves can be found by trying the following in suspicious places:
- shooting walls and objects (rocks, statues...), but this will need a higher level beam gun.
- pushing on walls and objects (stumps, statues...) but you will need more powerful gloves.
- planting a Lamra seed in a field.
Various characters will give you gifts of gold, life, etc. As a bonus, the '80s Japanese idol, Yoko Oginome, who sang the game's theme song, appears as an "elusive" character.

Sub-Screen (In Space)

The different planets have their initials (E,P,R,D,M,H) shown in the lower right corner. Your current planet is shown by a flashing initial. Once you have collected the treasure for a planet, the colour behind that planet's initial will flash.
You can warp from one planet to another after you have collected a warp code from one of its areas (by approaching and touching the alien who gives you the code.)
You can take medicine on this screen to replenish your life, oxygen, etc.
It's also possible to mix two medicines by pressing UP+A in the medicine menu:
- LUTON + MAG = life full
- LUTON + RALPH = large gold increase
- RALPH + MAG = life halved!
Only after you buy the communicator device and are taught a comms code by a character on the ground can you input it on this screen for a game hint.

Yes, Ginga Denshou makes you do a lot of running around, decoding, deciphering, etc. in order to get clues to the items that you need to complete your adventure.
That was the whole point of the multimedia concept: kids would actively listen to the story on the cassette for a hint, read the novella for clues and the Rosetta stone for the Hope language, and explore, explore. Actively searching and investigating rather than passively experiencing an action game was the educational goal. Did Imagineer succeed? What do you, the player, think?

Game Bugs

Yes, Ginga Denshou has a few minor and a couple major (game-breaking) bugs:

  • The main bug is that if you approach a wall while you are shooting, you may get forever trapped in that wall, or in invalid areas of the map! When that happens, the only thing to do is to wait and let your oxygen & life trickle down to Zero.
  • You may be aligned over a hole or cave, but the game doesn't let you enter it. You'll have to move your character down, up, left, or right, and try again.
  • Enemies in space can sometimes hit you when you go to the sub-screen.
  • When you have no Luton medicine vials, and mix some medicines with themselves, the Luton reading will become garbage (negative numbers, or 255 vials, maybe).
  • When shooting at stones/walls to find hidden caves, you'll need to keep a slight distance. Oftentimes if you're pressing right against a wall and shooting, it won't reveal the cave, even if there really is one there.
  • The ending text crawl is... um... straight-to-the-point. (Not a bug, per se.)

HINTS & SPOILERS!

Hope words tend to inflect when used in sentences, eg: FIRUDA -> FIRUDO, so obviously the game designer was a fan of Italian / Portuguese / Latin / Esperanto.
